Meeting with IFC in South Africa

Within the framework of the National project "Develop a green finance system to promote green economy in Vietnam" led by Assoc. Prof. Tran Thi Thanh Tu, the research team conducted a field trip and In-depth interviews with experts, bankers, investors in the Republic of South Africa, from 24 to 30 October 2019.


The team worked with experts on corporate governance, environmental risk and green bond at IFC headquarters in Johanesberg, one of the three South Africa’s capitals. The team shared research results of the project and disscussed about the development of green banking system and green bond in Vietnam. IFC experts discussed and commented on the research results as well as policy recommendations for Vietnam from experiences of IFC and South Africa in developing the green finance system. The team also conducted in-depth interviews with IFC's experts on risk management, social responsibility, environment and role of the South African Government in developing the finance system and and green investment and its difficulties as well.

Visiting Capetown, the second city of South Africa, the team had chance to learn about green investment systems, especially renewable energy systems, water-saving systems, and waste treatment systems. The biggest economy in Africa with per capita income of more than $ 6300/year is mainly contributed by the mining, finance and tourism industries. The private sector and foreign organizations play an important role in developing green investment and green economy, while the role of the Government is obcure.

 

In-depth interview with expert in Africa

At the end of the study tour, the team obtained useful research findings and in-depth interviews to support the development of policy solutions and recommendations to promote Vietnam’s green finance system. Besides, many opportunities for cooperation and research between Vietnam and new partners in Africa were also opend up.
